Human Trafficking

Sex trafficking | Linda Smith | TEDxPortland

Human Trafficking- “form of modern-day slavery in which traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control victims for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or labor services against his/her will.”

I always wonder why such a huge issue never gets talked about or why when i bring it up some people don’t see the importance of why it’s such an issue. Human trafficking has been happening for years longer than we’ve known. What most people don’t know is that human trafficking is not just used for sex. Other forms of human trafficking are:

  • Forced Labor
  • Child Labor
  • Trafficking for Tissue, Cells and Organs

The one thing wrong with all of this is that you rarely ever hear about any of this. Movies are made about such issues and books but it’s like people care more about partying, drugs, and hookups. Ever read the book ‘Sold by Patricia Mccormick’? if not i really recommend you to read it. It wasn’t until i read the book i really truly understood what sex trafficking was. The book took place in India although the book is fiction it’s based off true stories. I took it upon myself to do more research on human trafficking, watched documentaries, read articles and books.

As i did my research i learned more that human trafficking is happening right in my own backyard. America land of the free right. In the united states there are about 14,000 to 17,000 trafficked yearly, there’s a total of 30 million people being trafficked globally.

  • 68% of them are trapped in forced labor.
  • 26% of them are children.
  • 55% are women and girls.

A $150 billion worldwide industry is based off forced labor and human trafficking.

Linda Smith states in the ted talk that 65% of buyers are in position of authority/trust and 56% work with kids. These are mainly adult men buying young girls to have sex with them. Let alone that we have young girls in america disappearing everyday for the pleasure of someone else. We have young girls being sold around the world for the satisfaction of someone else.

The longer we continue to worry about partying, drugs, and hookups this issue will never go away. We have people being forced to do things they don’t want to do, that we have the opportunity to do but abuse it. Not only abuse it but don’t realize how lucky some of us are. You’re reading this right now while some young girl is being mistreated. You have the ability to say no, they don’t.

For my ladies remember your body is a temple and don’t you ever forget that. Lets start to empower each other and become more aware of such issues. ❤
