The power of defining yourself

The power of defining yourself | Amma Asante | TEDxBrixton

In “The power of defining yourself | Amma Asante | TEDxBrixton” Amma Asante talks about how the two worlds she belongs to, the societies in both tried to define her as an outsider. Also how she was so worried about fitting into both that she wasn’t able to define herself.  She emphasizes on how society will try to shape us to what is normal that it does not allow us to shape ourselves. That society has antiquated biased rules to maintain a status quo when it’s really just an unjust status quo. She presents the idea of how society will try to form the person you are. That people will try to deny the truths because it’s out of society’s normality. No matter what world you are from you shouldn’t let society chose who you are destined to be. Nor should it change the way you think or go about things. Societal norms interfere with defining yourself. Excessive conformity leads to loss of personal definition.
